"Too Many Heroes"

I'm confused about the Oceanic-6 lie, can someone help?
After Jack helped at the crash that he caused on the bridge (due to island intervention, we are now told), he was called a hero twice-over back at the hospital. So at that point I assumed that meant: first time a hero at the 815 crash, second time a hero at the car crash on the bridge. Then during Kate's trial, the lie is told that Kate saved everyone after the 815 crash all by her widdle-self, meaning that apparently Dr.Jack did nothing but stand around in awe watching Kate wield her superhuman powers to save, feed, and minister to, the survivors on her own.

So, if Jack supposedly didn't lift a finger to help after the plane crash, why did they tell him that he was a hero twice? Have I missed something, or is my brain so muddled by this gigantic puzzle that I can't see the obvious? I just don't get it. Thanks in advance to anyone who can clarify this for me. BTW, it's very funny to think about how resentful Dr.Moralpoopypants could get watching Kate receive the glory for all the hard work that he did on the beach saving people. Especially after he was elected to the job of island leader against his wishes, and all the gut-wrenching decisions he had to make by himself on their behalf. I wish that TPTB would work that into the story, it would be fun.

GS"Hero, two times over." To me, that meant that he saved both the Mom & the daughter in the SUV. There were two people in that vehicle, weren't there? So, that's how I took it.

Oh OK, that makes sense. I guess since in that same ep Kate said to him, "Still saving lives, eh?", that my brain just coupled it with what was said to Jack before. Tx!

Capcom, my guess is that Jack is going to be the O6 rescue "hero." I'm still holding out for my Jack flies the O6 off the Island theory based solely on Jack's throwaway line in the pilot that he took some flying lessons. The story Jack tells on the stand is that Kate was the Island hero and in particular the one who rescued them from the crash, pulling people from the water, treating injuries, etc. In TTLG the hero twice over I think is getting the O6 back to the real world and the bridge car crash.

But as Gingersling said it could be as simple as kid and mom, and I think that was the intent in TTLG. Since we didn't know it was a flash forward at that time, we could take it that it referred only to the car crash, but in hindsight that it relates to the O6 and the car.

You're right, I didn't think of it that way either. Kate is the hero of the crash, and Jack is maybe the hero for getting the O-6 saved. It just seems so weird that Jack would not get any credit for all that he did post-crash, that I guess my brain was keeping out any other scenarios. :-) Thanks!

You know, considering the humungous lies that they have told about 815, maybe they will lie and say that Jack flew them all off the island in a Cessna made of coconuts!

Capcom,

Good points - what I would like to know is where do the O6 get picked up by rescuers? It can't be "the island", because Jack is still flying around looking for it. Do they get to another desert isle and pretend that's where they ended up?

I think hero twice over is referring to Jack saving the people in the fiery crash, and saving the O6.

Sorry about the order of my statements --pgt

Interesting question PGT. I wonder if since TPTB have not bothered to tell us how Mike and Walt got back to civilization yet, if we will have to wait a long time to find out how the O-6 got back? I hope not, I'm getting kind of tired of having to second-guess every new thing that happens.

Capcom: I think that the word "hero" can also mean "celebrity". Remember Hurley shouted out he was part of the Oceanic 6 thinking he'd get special treatment as a celebrity. Also, by making Kate the hero of the crash it might have helped her chances during her trial.

You know Maven, those two words really do get switched a lot in meaning nowadays, that's a good point. Today, the word hero isn't always used in the proper context of the definition.

My guess is that the big lie entails all of them coming across as heroic in one sense or another. They all played a role and became heroes of a sort. . .

Capcom said...

Well that makes sense, Lost2010, especially with what Maven said. I can definitely see the press tagging them like that, for the purpose of how they survived the hardship of the crash, etc. Thanks everyone! :-)

It is great to not have to watch this show alone. I'd be lost without all the amazing LoCo input!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure most of them are considered heroes in some fashion. Just because Kate saved people after the crash doesn't mean that Jack didn't supposedly do something heroic during their stay on the island, or (as has been suggested) getting them rescued. So I don't think there's any contradiction there. (And I do believe the "hero twice over" thing is referring to Jack's status in the O6, absolutely). I think the bigger question is why they say they survived on an island in the South Pacific when the plane was found in the Indian Ocean.

I'll drink to that, PAA. :@)

See, I'm starting to think wormhole again and I know that's probably not right. . .

I wish/hope that you are right, it would just be so cool to find that they can jump around between Devil's Triangle areas on the earth.
