My sleepy contribution for tonight's lightspeed episode before I retire, will be some tidbits on our glimpses of Dan's notebook. Here is a link for a good start in deciphering what he's got scribbled in his pages, such as lightcones tipping, Eddington-Finkelstein, etc:
http://www.etsu.edu/physics/plntrm/relat/blackhl.htm
It all has to do with black holes, event horizons, and the photons in lightcones escaping (or not) from said event horizons. Whew. Are TPTB really going to show the island going through a black hole? If so, I can't wait...but I thought they said there would be no black holes, way back when. Anyway, if you have the stomach for it, keep clicking on "Go to next section" on the bottom left of each page in the link above, for more space-time fun! I found this illustration interesting, because it mentions "time reversed". And when Locke flips that switch in the Orchid, I hope that we hear some major sound effects, like how the TARDIS sort of gasps it's way through time...and more purple skies too.
2costa over at TLC made note of this Wiki page which does show many similarities to Dan's formulas, and also defines the variables used (I know, not exactly light reading here in this post, but it's kinda fun):

Awesome info, Capcom!
Tx! The first site is pretty good, and has lots of nice pictures so a dummy like me can understand the concepts. :-)
You're no dummy, Capcom. I can't even post on my blog the way you can, the screencaps, banners, etc. I just call Dan Faraday because its a guy thing. I'd chin nod him and say Hi, Faraday, then he'd look intently at me, tilt his head at a heading of 305 and say Excuse me, but...have we...met? Last night's episode was good, but kinda like the first half of a film, you think?
Gee thanks Wayne! Well, I think that I owe any blog talent that I possess first to the hundreds of presentations that I had to make in a management degree program that I took at work a while ago. I used to think all that effort was a colossal waste of time, but now I'm using all that I learned making pictures for my transparencies back then, in my blogs today. Weird. :-\ To bad I didn't learn any HTML stuff. Like I said on Nicole's blog, all I have to work with on this computer is stupid paintbox for now.
Yeah, I like "Faraday" too, the science names are cool. I'm mostly right-brain-sided so when the science gets down to the nitty-gritty of math, my head explodes. I was so happy when Hawking started to republish his books with profuse illustrations! And those TV shows like 'Elegant Universe' with lots of animation are helpful for an image-driven brain like mine as well. :-D
BTW, your blogs look great, Wayne!
Some guys just have cool last names, I think, if there are three syllables involved. Right now, I'm hard-pressed to think of another character with a 3-S last name. I've named some grizzled old cops after streets here, i.e., Laramie and Armitage. I wonder if 150 years ago, his buddies called him Mike or (the original) Faraday? Jeremy Davies makes the character, no doubt there. And thanks about mine, though half the time I attempt something and destroy something else--the John Locke of bloggers--and have to ask a buddy's help and it always turns out to be the simpliest thing...
Word verification: ftlorgn. The last sounds we will hear from Keamey once he runs into Sayid and Sawyer.
Character on LOST, of coursde. And Frank Lapidus! So there, you see my point. The cool people have the 3-S last names...
Heheh, ftlorgn sounds like Elvish in Lord of the Rings too. :-)
That make sense to name cops after streets.
Hey, I got mentioned on your blog!!! I am honored... and glad I could help. I still don't really understand it...lol. My mind just has a hard time going to that place in the brain where anything physics-related resides.
The thing that I do see as I look at all the equations is that "G" stands for gravity, so I guess that's where the special magnetic properties of the island could come into play? BUT I don't understand why you have to come and go from the island via a specific heading... Here's a crazy theory... what if they DO all get off the island, but they don't all leave using the same heading? What would that do?
(lol, wv = ucick.... what is, what you do when playing soccer - ucick the ball? OR what you do when Lost is over... ucick and scream)
Hey Codysmom! You were the first one to transcribe the text on his notebook for us, on the same night as the show!
Yeah, that's why I stick with the books like Hawking's new ones that have all those pretty illustrations for the image-preferred brains like mine. You should see me at the bookstore, pulling out science books and putting them right back after I see them stuffed with math! :-p
The only thing that I can think of so far relating to the coordinates is what some of us were thinking in relation to the Moebius band. I put an illustration of it in this post after the rocket experiment (see bottom of post):
http://capcomslost.blogspot.com/2008/02/fave-scene-403.html
In that illustration of curved time/space, there might be only one path for getting out, or you will slide along the sides of the curve and move forward or backward in time, or just fall back into the island like Des did. Maybe. :-)
Ah, yes, I remember the discussion about the Moebius band. That is something I actually could (kind of) understand... lol Thanks for reminding me and for the link!
you said....

See? It IS possible to put it in plain English:) so that even someone like me can understand! Now I hope that this is where Lost is going, because I get it... lol Now, explain the "ghosts" to me... (Christian, Charlie, etc) and I'll be all set:)
No-can-do, about the ghosts. :-B
