"The Kevin Callis Question"

Perhaps I've missed the answer somewhere along the way, but I've been wondering what's up with Kate's husband now that she's a worldwide celebrity who was rescued from a horrific crash. Aren't they still married? Wouldn't he notice that she was one of the Oceanic-6 in the news? Wouldn't he want some explanations from her? He didn't seem to me to be the type who would just roll over and play henpecked and go away. After all, he is an officer of the law, and the law might be important to him. (What do you think Wayne, since your dad was a policeman?)

So have I missed this topic addressed somewhere? I need to rewatch the conspiracy film on the DVD extras again, I haven't seen it since DarkUFO posted it a couple months ago, so maybe this point has been broached there. But it just seems to me that Kate's problems back home would also include having to face the guy that she deceived and blew off because she couldn't handle "taco nights". If I were him I'd want some answers.

I'd think that Kevin could have ended the marriage right after Monica ran away because she had entered it fraudulently, though I'm not sure how you'd prove it.

I'd also guess how Kevin would deal with Kate's appearance as one of the O6 would depend on what he'd told everyone about Monica's disappearance. Maybe he told everyone some elaborate lie and now people would say, hey Kevin that girl looks like your wife and he'd say she looks similar, but Monica was actually a man baby or something like that.

Good questions, Capcom. I could see why he wouldn't pursue Kate because he probably is totally embarrassed by his wife running off on him. He most likely wants nothing to do with her. Hurt runs deep.

But other people might put two and two together about Kate being Monica.

I guess it's just one of those dramatic license things that we have to accept (like the totally unrealistic trial Kate when through).

Hey, those are great ideas, and I can work with any of them in my head. Especially the artistic lisence part, which is actually how I figure it's going to be, i.e., TPTB will just let us assume whatever we want to.

;-)

Capcom,

That is such a good question. I had forgotten about Kevin, and being a policeman, you would think he would want to know what happened after she left.

Well, Capcom, I think its more guilt through association, what cops call a potential for blowback. If he approaches her, the whole married to a fugitive thing comes into play. Also, Kate wouldn't care about looking Kevin up because, well, she's Kate and only gives a damn about herself.

But any way you look at it, Kevin being connected to Kate regardless of any truth/lie whatever, his career is probably gone.

I thought I read somewhere that a marriage under a false name wasn't legally binding. Of course it could have been in a work of fiction so don't put much weight into that.

I guess it depends on where they want to go with the story. Mentally, after reading your query, I had Callis - drunken - kicked off the force - a private detective - and potentially investigating and bringing down the Oceanic 6. . .

But I'm a bit on the day-dreamy side. :)

Tx PGT!

Wow, interesting points from that vantage point Wayne! And kind of sad too. I agree about Kate. :-)

LOL Lost2010, and what you said made me think that Kevin might go nuts and track her down to kill her....cuz...there was just so much killing in S-4 and all, it would just fit the pattern.

What Memphish says is true about ending the marraige and Maven & Lost could be right, too, about Kevin just getting drunk & embarassed, but I doubt we'll see him again, as there are no more flashbacks/fwds. As Capcom sd, my dad's a retired cop, but if you look at any politician running for office, you can see where any little thing can be played up by "guilt through association." So it is with cops, both good AND bad, in that blowback (AKA Cover Your Ass) can follow you for years. If Kevin even sniffs around Kate someone who has investigated Kate will learn about Monica.

The only way I could see Kevin in another scene would be if he ended up dating or marrying Juliet's sister (who lived in Miami, and Keving was a Metro-Dade cop). I doubt we will see that, but who knows?

Thanks for that additional info Wayne! Very thought provoking.

We could see Kevin in the "present" (or the Outer Shell of the Kerr theory, if you will), but I don't think that he'll be showing up anywhere either. It would be funny though if he goes to LA, runs to the Ajira terminal just as the O-6 are taking off, and Kate looks out the window and there he is on the tarmac shaking his fist at her. :o)

capcom - That's the little side reel that will be running in all our heads now. We'll see Ajira taking off and we'll know that Kevin's on the tarmac below. . .

I wish I followed the ARGs, though I've seen the Ajira logo on your blog.

LOL Lost2010. :-D

Don't worry Wayne, nothing to see or do with that really. They just let us book our seat on the flight, and then that was the end of it for now. Something might happen next week before the episode maybe though. We'll let you know if it does!

BTW Wayne, Roog on the TLC blog posted a quickie theory that perhaps the O-6 are needed to go back because for some reason they might be the only ones who can change fate without inducing a course correction (or something like that), and I thought that this could fit in well with your theory that some of the Losties are variables in the VE. :-)

Thx, Capcom. Like with my Twitter novel (which was reviewed in the Boston Phoenix this week), my other thought experiment was that I always thought the #s were players on a chessboard, human designates, I guess. But Bigmouth at EYE M SICK nailed it that the O6might just be the Island's Constant. And I really really do hope you'll post on our friend in The Orchid soon. :)

See you all on the Island!

I don't know anything about the law. Could Kevin have divorced Kate because she had abandoned him.
I agree that Kevin doesn't want to be associated with her and her criminal background. That's the reason she left him to protect his career. Or at least that's what she told him.

I am such a fan of Nathan Fillion...I wish he would come back somehow. Maybe in a good way?...

I just love the idea of that Twitter thing that you and your friend have going Wayne. Are you the first ones to write something like that? As for the video theory, I have to wrap my brain around it a little more to be able to write it up. Or, I might just copy and paste some of the things that you emailed me, if that's OK. :-)

Hi Sayidsgirl! I'm wondering all that too, but I guess it could vary from state to state. Maybe like Lost2010 said, it might not even be valid because the marriage license was false. ???

Hi Ellen! I know, I like him too, this post thought was mostly about wishfull thinking, he deserves to be seen some more! Heh, even if he punched Kate out, I would consider that as him coming back in a good way. :-D

*giggle* - yeah, good way!

Hey, Capcom. You can certainly cut & paste, I'll take a break from the writing again in a while, and send a new email that you can use as a jump-off point. There have been quite a few people writing Twitter novels (WIRED called the "twillers"), but far as I can tell, most of the others miss the whole point of the brevity of Twitter, plus I'm co-writing this with a person I've never met nor know little about, which also kinda what Twitter is about (the social networking between strangers). Other writers write a sound effect (THUD) we keep using words and more words, I call them image bullets. The guy at Boston Phoenix likened our effort to the imagist movement in writing (and painting). I've been reading up on this new Japanese subgenre of novels written on cell phones, an example being a girl who took all her old diaries and typed them into her cell phone. You are a painter, Capcom, so you'll see my befuddlement here. I can type (or hand write) on numerous things, at the moment I'm coming up blank re: art. Maybe the old Silly Putty method of image transfer. Seriously, take all the diaries and type them into the cell phone, and this is now a HUGE thing in Japan, granted there must be some originality there. Our book is currently 5,000 words (about 20 pages) with the "book" advancing approx. 3 sentences 20 times a day. Instead of babbling on, I should've written the cut & paste re: The Orchid's co-worker...I'll get to it now.

Hey it’s Rachel from theackattack.com, I just wanted to let you know that I added you to my blogroll! (A while ago actually haha - love your site!)

Capcom said...

Hi Rachel! Thanks! Feeling's mutual. :-D

I hear ya Wayne. For some reason, all of a sudden "art" is often defined by being the first person to do some bizarre thing on a new technology, whoopee. Art does need to stay fresh and push boundaries when the boundaries get stale -- e.g. Pollack being the first person to drip paint on a canvas, etc. But next thing ya know, some one will put their cellphone/camera in the clothes dryer while it's spinning and video that, and call it art (I've seen lamer "installation" art in galleries than that tho!). :-p

What you and your co-author are doing is completely different than just "puking" something onto a technology and putting a label on it. It's all about working out the creative process in a new way via a new tech application, which I love. Especially that it's being done in tandem as a cooperative process. :-)

P.S. In fact, I think that I should post something about your project on my Art Museum blog too! I might have to copy/paste some of your description about it there. I kind of want to draw a pic of the Motel sign also it looks so great, but I have to finally finish that transcription for my NY church first before I start a new art project.

I also love Nathan Fillion. I got the Firefly dvds for Christmas, and my hubby and I just finished watching them. Sigh!!

Nathan indeed has a new tv show. "Castle" I think it's called. Looks like good fun!

Good question, Cap. I wonder if this loose end of Kate's is going to come back to bite her?

LOL Amused! Yes, I can't wait to see his new show. :-)
