"Project Memento Mori"

During the wait for the poster #16 release over at LostARGs, we talked about creating a legend for the Memento Mori painting of "Mr. Black", in the fashion of the "Linder Gallery" painting that Thorsten, et.al., have shared with us. So I numbered the objects (all of them, even MIB himself and his belt -- you never know, he might use it to strangle someone). Let me know if I missed anything. Just about the only things I didn't label were the table, wall, and the wooden looking form in the back shadow by the tapestry:

This might need to be labeled, I don't know. Could it be the door of the cabin? I raised the brightness and contrast to highlight it, but it just looks like a door or panel. Update~ thanks to all the help, here is how we've labeled the objects thus far:

1) Smokey
2) Charlie
3) Bird killed by Walt
4) White tennis shoe
5) Tapestry yarn/Locke's hatch cables
6) Jacob's tapestry
7) MIB
8) Hurley's paintbox
9) Toy airliner
10) Tree limb
11) Faraday
12) MacCutcheon Whisky
13) Gas mask
14) Four-toes
15) Coconuts
16) Cabin chair?
17) Hurley's drawing
18) Locke
19) Danielle
20) Wooden dolls
21) Mary statue
22) Eko's stick
23) Backgammon pieces
24) Compass
25) Sawyer's letter/Locke's Smokey or BDM sketch
26) Flies
27) Urchins
28) Papayas
29) Polar bear skull
30) Eko and Yemi photo
31) Swan timer/counter
32) Danielle's map
33) Knife -- that killed Jacob?
34) Dynamite
35) DI beer
36) Charlie's bag of heroin
37) Watership Down
38) Charlie's ring
39) MIB's belt/rope
40) Sand/Ash
41) Yemi's cross
42) Unknown cloth
43) Hurley's Lotto Ticket
44) Locke's note to Jack
45) Charlie's greatest hits list

Now that they are mostly all labeled it doesn't seem so mysterious, but it's good to know anyway, I suppose. Thanks for any help! The original can be seen here at the gallery blog for the Lost art project: http://lostundergroundartshow.blogspot.com/

  1. Hey Capcom
    Great job.
I think #5 might be yarn/thread for making the tapestry. But not 100% sure.

  2. Me again
#17 Hurley drew the sphinx at Santa Rosa in Season 5. I think it was when Locke came to get him to go back to the island.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Or was that the igloo? hmmm
    I know Hurley drew though.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Oh wow, sure, I can see that! Tx!

Hey BTW, I don't know why Blogger is saying that I don't allow anonymous comments, all I did was turn on the word verification to get rid of the spam posts, so I have no idea why that's turned on as well. Sorry any Anons, you've been my blog friends too!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Oh yeah, that's right, thanks for that also!

    :-D

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think #5 is the wiring from the plane that Locke & Kate used to go down into the hatch.

Great job Capcom! I'm just having a hard time seeing the #'s. I can't enlarge for some reason.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Is 45 James's letter to Tom Sawyer? I need to go back & look at G1988 site to see larger image I think.

    ReplyDelete
  8. COOL!!!! i'll take a closer look tomorrow at "work"

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think I know 36 but I think I'll quit and delete my posts. I rudely took over this post sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  10. You beat me to that Sayid'sgirl! I was just about to correct myself. I figured out how to look at image bigger. :)

  11. I deleted one of my posts then it wanted me to log back in. I just used your link in my favorites now all my trash cans are gone. Maybe this post will bring them back if not please delete my posts. Sorry again for high jacking your post. I should go to bed.

  12. I have GOT to get a job at a library Greg! X-D

Hey thanks ladies! I don't know why the image won't enlarge for you Ginger, and unfortunately I'm not html-savvy enough to make a larger link elsewhere for viewing. Maybe someone can help out. I put a link to the gallery at the bottom for easy reference because some of the numbers cover up the objects, like in the case of that tiny round "thing" that is #36.

All good input, thanks! I'll probably update it tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Heheh, no problem Sayidsgirl, it's all good from friends. :-)

Glad that you got the enlarged version Ginger.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well I deleted some of my posts. I leave it to some of your other blogger friends. :)

  15. Is #10 maybe Eko's stick? Or didn't Ben or someone have a walking staff?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Just saw Eko's stick on table, DUH. Still, I remember Ben walking/hiking w/a stick/staff. Am I crazy?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ginger that's what I thought, but it doesn't have vines tied around it or scripture written on it.

Trying to think if anyone used a walking stick. Maybe Locke not sure.

    ReplyDelete
  18. No I don't think you're crazy. I think I remember him using a walking stick too.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yes, I'm confused about the two sticks as well.

    ReplyDelete
  20. #25 maybe James's letter to Tom Sawyer? He always kept it folded up in his pocket! I think that's it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. That's a good guess Ginger.
So who wore a purple robe? If that's what # 42 that is.

    ReplyDelete
  22. OK long shot on 15. Ready? The bowl that Locke mixed up his hallucinagen (sp?) paste stuff in for his vision quest/sweat lodge thingy or for Boone's little trip. What cha think? Huh? Huh?

    ReplyDelete
  23. This is so fun! The only thing I can think of for #42 is Eloise @ the Lamp Post station in season 5. I don't have the DVDs, but I think when Ben came in she was lighting some candles in the church & wearing a scarf on her head. Again, just going by memory here.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Illix thinks that 25 is Locke's drawing of Smokey, since it's by the compass. I thought that the gray area was just a shadow, but I don't know. It's too small for me to tell.

15 definitely has me stumped. Oh...the bowl, I just read your post!

Wow good guess on something that Mrs.H wore for 42, she did have a shawl, etc. at various times. What color was Hurley's robe in the crazyfarm?

    ReplyDelete
  25. I like that idea. Was it purple? hmm
If no one gets #36 I'll come by tomorrow and give my opinion. I think I'm right.

    ReplyDelete
  26. This is almost as fun as last night. I'm posting on two blogs an F5ing from time to time.

What will I do when this is over. lol

    ReplyDelete
  27. LOL. I for one will be so glad to pry myself away from the computer for a while! But it will feel lonely without my Lost friends, I'll probably have withdrawals and sit at the computer and sigh.

    :-)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hello everyone.

    Guesses:

5- Mentioned already. The wiring that lowered Kate into the Hatch

    10 - The tree the shoe is hanging from. I know what you're thinking...yes, I'm serious :)

    17- Mentioned already. Hurley's drawing.

25- Mentioned already. James Ford's letter to "Sawyer".

    42- No idea?

    45- Charlie's Greatest Hits

    ReplyDelete
  29. I just checked a pic with better resolution, 45 is numbered #3, #2, #1 etc..it is Charlie's Greatest Hits.

Now for that silky robe thingy...

    ReplyDelete
  30. capcom
lol I know what you mean. I wonder if they have something for AGR withdrawl.

    Thunderstorm
    Any guess for # 36?

    ReplyDelete
  31. A little bigger.
    http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YPCf8JFgUdI/SyisruF4zHI/AAAAAAAAMqA/rP6hbgUfFOw/s1600-h/P1020791.JPG

Cap, I see you have question marks by a few as well. I just wanted to take a stab, I agree with the unmentioned.

9- Baby mobile, I would think.
26- Flies on top of something.
33- I don't recall the differences between the knives but this one has a serrated edge. From memory, I think the knife that killed Jacob was old-timey but don't hold me to that.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ding ding ding we have a winner.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think it might be Kate's plane only because the mobile had Oceanic planes on it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yeah, I suppose you could say it's from the Mary statues, but it's a little bag of heroin nonetheless.

The orange thing with flies on it is bizarre. It almost looks like a loaf of bread or something haha. .

SG, were you or anyone else able to pull up the other picture?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi Thunderstorm!

The treeeeeeeeeee! OK, I can buy that.

Yes I agree, I looked at a HUGE image of the painting a while ago, and it looks like flies there. But, where were flies? At this point though, I don't remember anything, I'm poster-brain-dead!

I'm feeling the Charlie's-note as well.

I'm also leaning towards you-all's idea about Sawyer's note.

Crikey, the heroin! Oh man, if it was a snake...!

    Thanks! :-D

    ReplyDelete
  36. Just in case, sorry about all the posts...I'll check back later.

    Slighty bigger.

SG, not sure about the plane. From memory, I was thinking that Kate's plane was solid silver/gray.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hey, no prob! We're having fun. Yes, that's the big image that I saw, it's great for checking up close, thanks for linking to it for us.

I still can't get a bead on #15 so that it makes sense in my mind's eye. I think that I need to check out the caps of the episode of Locke's steambath.

I thought that Kate's plane was gray too, but I'll have to check on that also, and the mobile. My mind is really fried about now.

    ReplyDelete
  38. BTW I just noticed, did I miss something just to the left of #34? Like a piece of leather or parchment folded up? The cross is coming out of it. Actually I think that's Danielle's map, and the other one is someone else's overhead map.

    ReplyDelete
  39. #5 more yarn for the Tapestry
#10 stick the shoe is hanging on
    #15 is coco nuts
    #17 Hurleys painting
    #25 more maps
#36 nuts or plants that Sun planted
    #42 ?
    #45 Charlies list

  40. Capcom

What is the categorization for? It is amazing the amount of detail and "stuff" the artist got into the picture, that's for sure.It is a damn fine painting.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thanks Lisa! I'll be filling in everyone's help today.

What do you mean categorization, Neoloki? Do you mean why the artist chose these items and what is their significance? If so, I'm trying to find that out as well. I agree, it's a fantastic painting, I would have preferred prints/lithos like this over the urban-ish style that was used for most of the posters. Altho I do very much like the clean graphics of the Locke, Crash, Swan, PB, and Barracks. And the Hatch is a great look, very dreamlike.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Damon and Carlton only gave clues to next season to Tyler Stout, so there wouldn't be clues in this painting. Unless I missed something?
Hope this doesn't sound snarky. Mostly, I am just curious.

    ReplyDelete
  43. so is all that is lacking #42?

    got me

    ReplyDelete
  44. Right Neoloki, I don't believe that there are any clues in here either. I don't know what the general consensus is though, except for what you just said over at Big's place. *wink* I'd say that there are more clues in the Linder Gallery than in this painting, heheh.

Well Greg, any votes for whether the "ropes" are Locke's wires or Jacob's yarn? And what about the toy plane, as in does it belong to anyone/anyplace or is it just a toy plane?

    ReplyDelete
  45. quite right Capcom. It was an officially sanctioned event, after all.

    ReplyDelete
  46. maybe (42) is what Flocke had draped over his head when he introduced himself to Caesar on Hydra beach.

    ReplyDelete
  47. i thought Locke was wearing a hoody but otherwise it could be

MIB: lord of time & death

    ReplyDelete
  48. guess i vote for yarn, i think locke hung himself with an extension cord but my old mind is forgetful these days

    ReplyDelete
  49. since the plane is too big for being Kate's, didn't Frank drop a toy plane in his aquarium or something like that?

    ReplyDelete
  50. isn't 42 a large piece of clothing like material?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh, Locke's hanging cable! Very important icon. And Frank's plane, yes. OK, I'll update those added items soon. Tx!

    ReplyDelete
  52. That's what it looks like to me too Neoloki, like velvet or silk. Or maybe Mrs.H's cape as someone suggested. Maybe a quick look Mrs.H's entry at Lostpedia will solve the problem, I'll check.

    ReplyDelete
  53. yeah, Eloise's cape. that's it. I like that one.

    ReplyDelete
  54. !gasp! How about this image? It isn't velvet but it is purple: Cape

    ReplyDelete
  55. i think the cape is about close as anything ever will be so El's cape works for me

    ReplyDelete
  56. I wasn't under any impression these were clues, I just thought it was a fun time-killing puzzle. :)

    Cap, quoting you.

"BTW I just noticed, did I miss something just to the left of #34? Like a piece of leather or parchment folded up?"

Yep. Looks like another map folded up but I couldn't tell you which.

    ReplyDelete
  57. You're right, and I meant to change it to "Danielle's mapS" or just "maps" this morning, but forgot to. I decided to lump them in together instead of re-numbering the whole thing at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Hey capcom
I see you've finished your "list".
I have a question could # 23 be the black and white stones Jack found with Adam and Eve?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Oh, yes, that too. What do you think, Locke's b/w backgammon pieces or the stones? They do look a little flat like checkers, but I forgot about the stones. Hmm.

    ReplyDelete
  60. capcom
It could be either but my first thought was the stones.

    ReplyDelete
  61. i would say backgammon pieces due to their shape and being right in front of Locke's picture

but they are interchangeable symbolically so either one

y'all did notice everybody in the painting is dead (except i guess MIB), right?

    ReplyDelete
  62. Right Greg! I was wondering too, since there are lots more dead peeps, if these are the most important dead ones. Which makes me wonder again how much input from TPTB the artist may have gotten for this compostion.

    ReplyDelete
  63. hi, capcom. Not that it matters much, but I was just watching The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham again and noticed that when Flocke is introduced he has an Ajira blanket over his head. It is also a royal blue, so 42 could still be that.

By the way, are you participating in Lost University? or anyone else posting here?

    ReplyDelete
  64. That's also a possiblity, thanks!

Our friend Thorsten over at LostARGs sent few Qs to the artist, and got a short response that I've been meaning to add here. Apparently the MIB painting is his version of the painting "Vanitas" by Bailley (1651), in which there is also a cloth on the table. link

I'm guessing now that the cloth has no meaning really, but there seem to be enough cloths around for us to attribute it too. Unfortunately the artist didn't give Thorsten any details on the items that he chose to substitute into his version, or why he chose them.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Hey Capcom
Since the artist is using vantis symbols. Maybe what I thought was tapestry yarn is the vine that Ethan hung Charlie with. Although Charlie didn't die so I may be wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  66. That's a good one too. I'm leaning towards the idea of the tapestry yarn, since it looks to be in so many strands, but I'm not sure.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Great labeling! Quite interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Thanks! Yes we had some fun that night labeling, it was a rough night of waiting overall, haha.

    ReplyDelete
